Ellen Page: Still on a roll? New film debuts at Brattle Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 July 2008

The plot: Teenaged outsider Tracey, traumatized by the disappearance of her younger brother Sonny, leaves her small town for the bright lights of Winnipeg. Alone and broke, she wanders the streets, encountering other, more wizened outsiders and, every once in a while,Ellen Page in "The Tracey Fragments" out of the corner of her eye, catching a glimpse of someone who may be her missing brother. All the while she reminisces about her life at home and in school.
The dialogue is precise in its evocation of a teenager’s thoughts and McDonald’s use of split screen is consistently compelling, virtually tearing the screen apart in an effort to capture Tracey’s headspace. creating a character who is simultaneously infuriating and touching. A.O. Scott of the New York Times calls it "Fierce, enigmatic and affecting… [Page] brilliantly embodies precocious intelligence under various forms of duress.” Tickets: $9,50. It's running through Thurs. July 3.  Showtimes: Check Brattle website. There are two showings some days, more on others.
