George Lakoff on Why We Do What We Do Print E-mail
Thursday, 05 June 2008

Thurs. June 5

The topic at the Ford Hall Forum Thursday June 5 is one you'd have a hard time disagreeing with: "The Political Mind: Why You Can't Understand 21st Century Politics with an 18th Century Brain." Heck, we'd say 20th century brain. Sept. 11, 200George Lakoff1 changed a whole lot of things, as did the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Then, there's Tibet, China, human rights and the Olympics. There's the fierce civil war in Darfur, the recession, the housing crisis, the gas crisis, the population explosion, to name but a few. George Lakoff, professor of Cognitive Science and Linguistics at UC Berkeley, will be speaking at the Boston Public Library on that topic. Lakoff, author of "Moral Politics: How Liberals and Conservatives Think," will explore cognitive science and political action. Such as: Why Americans will vote against their own interest? How objectivity gets tossed aside in the voting booth? He'll be delving into his afroementioned latest book, "The Political Mind," and discuss how the mind works, how society works and how they do or do not work together. It's free and runs 6:30-8 p.m.
