Pizzarelli’s latest project “Dear Mr. Sinatra” (his first ever Sinatra album) is on Telarc records is a natural progression in a storied career that includes highly acclaimed tributes to Nat ‘King’ Cole and Antonio Carlos Jobim. (You may have also spotted John between innings in Red Sox games in past years, singing "the wonder of it all" for Foxwoods.) “Dear Mr. Sinatra,” pays homage to Ol' Blue Eyes and focuses on songs tha t were specifically written for him. Of note: Early in his career, Pizzarelli opened for Mr. Sinatra on tour. His father, the jazz guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli, played on many of Sinatra’s seminal recordings. “Frank has always been one of my main musical influences. I love the way he transforms himself from song to song,” says Pizzarelli. “In the early 1990s, I was honored to open for him with my quartet in Europe and around the states. Frank would appear in the wings during our final number, swinging and clapping and smiling. He would come onstage and cheer for us. It was an honor to play with him and we were thrilled he enjoyed our music.” Tickets: $35. In other Frank news: On May 13, 2008, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and New York, New York, the Postal Service issued a 42–cent, Frank Sinatra commemorative stamp in one design in a Pressure–Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) pane of 20 stamps. 400 Soldiers Field Road, 617-562-4111 www.scullersjazz.com |
