Waco Brothers: Live on Disc and Live at T.T the Bear's Print E-mail
Monday, 02 June 2008

It's their first live disc after seven studio efforts. The Waco Brothers remind me a bit of Jason & the Scorchers, one of the first punk bands to truly understand and incoporate country music into their sound, without making compromises. Of course, theThe Waco Brothers Jon Langford whole alt-country field has been up and rolling for years, and the Wacos take on it ranges from satisfying to exhilirating. Few frontmen are as engaging, warm and witty as Langford, and these fellas, hatched in 1994, can kick out the jams alongside any one currently on the circuit. They're especially raucous live - as the new album shows - and can be counted upon to bring humor and politics to the stage at T.T.'s. A note from the live album's mastering engineer: He urged tehm to "err on the side of massive, fierce and overwhelming."
Got a coupla good critic type quotes to relay. From Billboard's Paul Verna: The Waco Brothers are "possessed by the demon of rock'n'roll, haunted by the ghosts of old country music... to make matters better, the group's originals are so consistently inspired they come across as instant classics." Magnet's Corey duBrowa writes, "There are God’s honest chops and songwriting going on here. These songs are soul music for the working man/woman, timeless mediations on God’s existence, the merits of grain alcohol and the cost of a hard day’s labor, melted down with a Southern-fried blowtorch into tasty three-minute kernels of truth."
Tickets: $11. Wacos on at 10:30.
