We spotted that on a placard in the window of the Harvard Square Newbury Comics. And we happen to agree with Doe. So, various record stores are doing various things to bring you in to sample their wares. For instance, this particular Newbury Comics has Boston's punk/cabaret band Dresden Dolls in store. Singer-pianist Amanda Palmer will paint; drummer Brian Viglione will DJ. Singer-guitarist Dennis Brennan will also perform. No doubt there's stuff like that going everywhere. We wonder what the Best Buys and Wal-Marts of the world will do? Hopefully, nothing. They're where the most of the people who still buy music shop, but they're far from being considered a record store. A record store, as Doe suggested, mean a place you can hang, talk music, meet like-minded fans. It can become a community, if you want it, rather like what can happen at a club. So, if you miss that vibe - or have never experienced - get out there Saturday and, uh, shop! Store opens at 10 a.m. The Garage, 36 JFK St., Cambridge, 617-491-0337 www.newburycomics.com |
