ongoing - Sat. May 3 We've long been fascinated by "found" art - discarded pieces of, well, whatever that strikes an artist's fancies, which she or he then turns into, well, something else e ntirely. That's what Mary Galli has up at ZuZu!. "For this particular art show," says Galli, "I am using a new medium for me - experimenting with my own stencils, spray paint, and graffiti markers - influenced of course by graffiti/street art from around the world. I will probably hang some old favorites too."
Galli, a Somerville resident, is a painter and creator of three-dimensional artwork whose sensibility is trash-to-treasure. She has an enthusiasm for folk art, particularly Mexican. Galli works in a variety of mediums, from found objects to papier-mache, acrylics, oils, and watercolors. Recent showings of Galli's work included 'Chickens, Sinners and Saints,' and 'Well Sung, Well Hung: Rock 'n Roll Art' at Sister Sorel in the South End. She also participated in the 2006 Cow Parade with her creation Moochas Gracias. Galli has been involved throughout the years in the Somerville Art Council's Grant Committee, Art Beat Festivals, and Windows Art Projects. Her fondness for travel and indigenous traditions merited her to become an assistant to one of the top folk art dealers in Boston, organizing multicultural artist demonstrations, international cultural tours, and community events. The ZuZu! exhibition is free. And, of course, there's ZuZu's excellent menu and bar of which you may partake. 474 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, 617-864-3278 www.mideastclub.com |
