It's That Time of Year: Schlock Around the Clock at the Brattle Print E-mail
Saturday, 05 April 2008

Sat. April 5

I've sometimes wondered - as you must have - whether the people that make schlocky movies know they're making schlocky movies when they're doing it. Or it's oSpice Girlsnly after they're finished that they realize. Or maybe they never do, until years later, it shows up at something like the Brattle Theatre's annual Schlock Around the Clock movie marathon. This starts at 10 p.m. Saturday April 5 and winds up about 11 a.m. the following day. Ned Hinkle, the Brattle's programmer, teases, "If you’ve ever wanted to see a tumor sprout a 400 year old fetus, Pam Grier being tortured in a giant wooden birdcage, or a monster carrot (no, not Carrot Top) then there will be no better place to be."

This year, there will be six cheesy movies on parade. Hinkle provides us with the capsule descriptions. The movies are: "The Big Bird Cage" (1972) - "a tale as old as time: an enterprising young woman falls in with the wrong crowd, endures hardships and torture, only to end up shucking sugar in a giant birdcage." "Galaxina" (1980) - "a combination of ‘Alien’, ‘Battlestar Galactica’ and ‘The Miracle of Life’." "Little Red Riding Hood and the Monsters" (1962) – "the holy grail of weirdo-kid movies, featuring a monster carrot, Tom Thumb, and a cache of monstrous monsters" "The Manitou" (1978) – " a 400-year-old Indian spirit materializes itself as a tumor on a woman’s back, with, I’m not kidding, Tony Curtis as the dashing, prancing fortune teller." "Poor White Trash" (1957) – "like the CCR song gone terribly wrong; a classic tale of love and lust on the bayou." "Spice World" (1997) – "Scary, Baby, Sporty, Ginger and Posh deal with the trials and tribulations of being this generation’s Supremes." Tickets: $20.
