Sun. April 13 We saw Chuck Berry at Sullivan Stadium - we think it was called that back then, the '80s - and part of our thinking was, well, this could be the last time. Look, you never kno w. He's 81 now. And he's playing at Berklee Performance Center Sunday April 13 at 7, with a hotshot band billed as the Super Group. It includes keyboardist Chuck Leavell (ex-Allmans Bros. Band, Rolling Stones sideman, drummer Simon Kirke (ex-Bad Company), drummer Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitarist Barry Goudreau (ex-Boston), guitarist Ricky Byrd (ex-Joan Jett and the Blackhearts), guitarist Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (ex-Doobie Bros., Steely Dan), bassist Barry Conte (Crown Jewels) and saxophonist Tim Ries (Rolling Stones sideman). Now, we know we'll here "Sweet Little Sixteen," "Roll Over Beethoven" "Rock and Roll Music," "Too Much Monkey Business," "Reelin' and Rockin'," and maybe even Chuck's only No. 1 hit - really! - the novelty song, "My Dina-a-Ling." Will he do the duckwalk? We really don't know. But while the bluesmen like Willie Dixon and Muddy Waters have claimed the right, dammit, to the play the blues well past "normal" retirement age, Berry is the oldest rocker we know who's still doing so.
(Yes, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis are still sort of active, if waxen, as they were on the Grammy show.) We can't state a claim to Berry's guitar or vocal prowess these days, but we're darn curious and we're of course thinking, this might be the last time. Adding a reason to go: It's all a benefit for Right Turn, the artist-focused rehab recovery program run by former Del Fuegos drummer Woody Giessmann in Arlington. I remember Woody telling me he used to walk around with a flask practically strapped to his thigh. No more. He's counseled many - including the Rolling Stones on tour - and his center holds numerous shows by and for musicians (and regular folk) in recovery. Check out the website below for more info on Right Turn and the concert, for which the tickets start $250-$35. 136 Massachusetts Ave., 617-266-7475 www.ticketmaster.com www.right-turn.org |
